Electrical panel upgrade in Chicago

A Chicago panel upgrade follows the same steps as anywhere else, with three local differences: the work must be done by a city-licensed electrical contractor, the wiring arriving at the panel is in metal conduit, and the city inspects before ComEd reconnects.

Call availability varies by area and time of day. Calls are routed to an independent electrical contractor. Reviewed .

How conduit affects the swap

In a cable-wired house, each circuit enters the panel as a flexible cable that can be re-routed to suit the new cabinet. In a conduit house, each pipe arrives at a fixed position. The new panel has to line up with those pipes, or the pipes have to be cut back and re-fitted, which is skilled work and takes time.

The benefit comes afterwards. If the old conductors are brittle or undersized, new wire can usually be pulled through the existing pipe without opening walls. That makes it practical to renew tired circuits at the same visit as the panel.

Why Chicago owners end up replacing a panel

  • A 60-amp fuse service in a bungalow

Too small for central air conditioning, let alone EV charging.

  • A basement panel that has been wet

Sewer backups during heavy rain reach basement equipment. Breakers that have been submerged are replaced.

  • A two-flat being converted or deconverted

Changing the number of units changes the number of meters and panels.

  • An insurer or buyer's inspector flags it

Fuse boxes and certain older breaker panels are common findings in pre-war housing.

The sequence, start to finish

  1. Load calculation and quote

Ask for the contractor's City of Chicago license number with the quote.

  2. City permit

The contractor applies to the Department of Buildings.

  3. ComEd service request

Needed when the service size or meter changes.

  4. Disconnect and replace

Expect most of a day without power.

  5. City inspection, then reconnection

ComEd restores the service after the city approves it.

Where to confirm Chicago panel requirements

Permit types and license records come from the Department of Buildings, and service requirements from ComEd. Confirm both before work is scheduled. The wider city guide is electricians in Chicago.

Chicago panel upgrade questions

Does a panel swap in Chicago need a permit?

Yes. Panel and service work is permitted work and is inspected by the city.

Can the old conduit stay?

Usually. Sound conduit is reused, and only the sections at the panel are altered to fit the new cabinet.

Will I need a new meter location?

ComEd decides when a service is upgraded. Ask the contractor to confirm before you agree a price.
